“Something amazing has been set in motion, and we can’t wait to see what these young men will do next.”
In February 2019, Glass launched Polmont Youth Theatre (PYT) in HMPYOI Polmont, the first ever Youth Theatre in a Scottish prison. It is delivered through our ongoing partnership with Barnardo’s and the Scottish Prison Service.
This project is a legacy from the National Theatre of Scotland’s Futureproof programme in Year of Young People 2018, when we worked with a group of young men in the prison to create MOTION; an original show about what it means to be a young man in Scotland today.
The group meet every Thursday inside the prison and make original devised theatre from their own ideas and perspectives about the world as they find it.
The group is currently led by Associate Artist, Gudrun Soley Sigurdardottir.
We are delighted to welcome Gary Lewis as the newly appointed patron of Polmont Youth Theatre. Gary is a Scottish actor and has had roles in films such as Billy Elliot, Gangs of New York, Neds and My Name is Joe as well as in television such as Outlander, Still Game and the docudrama Supervolcano. In 2001 he was awarded a BAFTA for best performance by an actor in a supporting role for Billy Elliot, a role for which he also won Best Actor (Flaiano Film Festival), British Actor of the Year (London Critics Circle Film Awards) and Ensemble Film Cast (Screen Actor’s Guild).
